Masdevallia seedling List March 2012

This is the best looking batch of seedlings we have ever produced. Most are ready to flower this Spring though the larger growing Masd. macrura hybrids may take a bit longer. They are well rooted in Sphagnum Moss in 50mm or 60mm tubes. The crosses represent medium and large flower varieties and mostly bred from our own parents but we have added the excellent Midas Touch and King of Kings parentage to widen the gene pool. As always a good percentage of stripes included and some spots. You should be able to find a few tantalizing new prospects amongst this lot as it is probably the most comprehensive list of hybrid Masdevallias in the world.

If you can't decide let us send you 30 plants for $300 post free while stock lasts

N.B. some seedlings are in small numbers and may sell out quickly so don't leave your run too late.

Image Description

1160 Rein Staal 'Tassie Giant' x Tuakau Candy 'Preston' Expect some large yellow or blazing orange with lovely red stripes. This is the Tuakau Candy that made Veitchs Candy Cane and we know how great they were.

1154 Sun Dancer 'Yellow Doll' HCC x Antizana 'Dragon Lair' HCC. For striped yellow show bench types you need look no further. Top pedigree on both sides, both have parented many award clones. Really good growers.

1142 Copperwing 'Sunburst' AM x Myra 'Preston' Purples, dark oranges, bicolours and with bold blotches in many. Big flowers from the Copperwing with broad petals. Very showy and quality.

*1141 Copperwing 'Sunburst' AM/AOC x Latin Bride 'Sunset Bay' Heat tolerant seedlings (*see note at the end of the list). The sensational 'Sunburst' on to a large rich pink. Well carried flowers in pinks and sunset tones.

1139 Bridie 'Beenak' x Masd. coccinea 'Dwarf Pink' Pretty pale pinks or whites, nice neat growth from 'Dwarf Pink', big flowers from Bridie.

1130 Veitchs Candy Cane 'Super Striper' AM/OSCOV x Tuakau Candy 'Preston' Quite excited by this cross taking VCC back to its striped parent. The stripes were already dark and bold now they will get even more intense. Deep orange with inky red stripes. Awards for sure.

1124 Rein Staal 'Tassie Giant' x Midas Touch 'Crown Vista' FCC/AOC. Two huge flowers so size guaranteed. Hoping the strong yellow from 'Tassie Giant' will be a strong influence and give us superb yellows. Has to be a sensational cross and take us to the next level.

1121 Bella Donna 'Prima' x (John Leathers x Masd. glandulosa) 'Purple Spotty' Scent on both sides, an extra bonus in Masdevallias. Mostly white but some lavender, some spotted. Medium size or even large if Bella Donna is dominant which it often is.

1115 King of Kings 'Dane Hill' AM/AOC x Gold Pinch 'Beenak' Wow, just how good will these be. 'Dane Hill' is a huge heavy duty orange, now add stripes from Gold Pinch that has stripes in both parents ( Golden Tiger x Pichincha ). Would have to be a strong bet for a champion or two.

1113 Heathii 'Dick Emery' AM/AOS x Rein Staal 'Sunburst' This Heathii is just fantastic; vivid colour and great shape now lets add my super Rein Staal. Expect large red-yellow mixes, tall stems of very showy blooms. Don't forget the Rein Staal is the parent behind all those Rein Suns, Clarendon Glory, Rein Wine etc.

1107 Sun Dancer 'Peats Ridge' AM x Masd. macrura 'Beenak' Great expectations for some award type flowers in this combination. Big bold and orange with sunset flares. Sun Dancer 'Peats Ridge' makes nice children, get some and see.

1105 Red Hot Chilli 'Beenak' x Masd. macrura 'Beenak' In Red Hot Chilli you have all the big parents, Masd. veitchiana, 2 x ignea, decumana, coccinea, now add macrura. We are expecting 'RED' flowers, big flowers and some nice surprises.

* 1104 Latin Sun 'Beenak' x Midas Touch 'Beenak' Heat tolerant. Dark rich red onto my burnt orange Midas Touch. Some lovely reds for sure and really easy to grow in a wider climate range.

* 1091 Copper Angel 'Highland' AM x Masd. ayabacana 'Blumen Insel' Heat tolerant. This cross is by Preston Ling one of Tassie's best Masdevallia growers and hybridisers. With Masd. ayabacana being the parent of Machu Picchu we hope this cross will also produce such lovely flowers.

1089 Masd. coccinea 'alba' x amabilis 'alba' A pretty primary hybrid which will produce small pretty flowers. Seem to be rather delicate growers.

1069 (Bob Hoffman x Masd. instar)'Peppered Orange' x Pixie Leopard 'Royale' AM. Medium size flowers from compact growing plants. We have flowered some exquisite seedlings from this cross in shades of purple-orange with spots. Beautiful shapes too. Thought we had sold out but found a few more.

1059 Flight of Fancy 'Beenak' HCC/AOC x Masd. macrura 'Beenak' Some more big flowers and we expect a range of colours yellow, orange, sunset combinations. Good substance and long lasting.

* 1057 Copperwing 'Sunburst' AM/AOC x Hot Shot 'Best' Heat tolerant. Two very nice parents that will produce strong reds and violet tones Hot Shots flower year round and have very strong upright stems. Will grow and flower in warmer climates.

1023 Rubicon 'Gilderoy' x Tuakau Candy 'Preston' The deep red Rubicon with added stripes, imagine red Veitchs Candy Canes! Some orange tones too but Rubicon is a lttle unpredictable with colour.

1021 Pixie Leopard 'Royale AM/AOC x Masd. angulata 'Big Red' A second batch of these amazing seedlings. Deep purples, mauves, some with bizarre purple blotches. Extremely productive bloomers even from small plants.

1012 Kara's Delight 'Black Legs' x Red Hot Chilli 'Beenak'. Medium size shapely blooms and from those we have flowered mostly bright red, some very dark, Masd. triangularis shaped flowers.

*958 Masd. floribunda x peristeria 'Giant' Heat tolerant. Miniature charmers, even small plants covered in blooms ranging in colour from tan, yellow, even dusty pink. Can be mounted on cork if desired.

941 Falcata 'Gold Digger' x Dazzler 'Beenak' HCC/OSCOV. Found a few more of this gorgeous cross. So far 100% stripes. Vivid orange with red and gold stripes. Good size blooms and well displayed.

925 Pichincha 'Cape View' AM/AOC x Stripendous 'Beenak' HCC. A back cross to the striped parent of Stripendous. As mentioned before this will intensify the stripes and maintain all the other outstanding attributes of the superb Stripendous. Awards for sure.

926 Pichincha 'Cape View' AM/AOC x Masd. veitchiana 'Great Grosvenor'. Remake of Stripendous burt using 'Cape View' rather then the paler 'Eruption' used before. Also using the superior 'Great Grosvenor' rather than 'Prince de Gaulle'. Highly reccommended.

917 Falcata 'Gold Digger' x Pichincha 'Cape View' AM The pure colour 'Gold Digger' will be perfect to take the crimson stripes from 'Cape View' and there is a lot of yellow in Cape View as well.

*910 Eunice (Cuzco Gold x Masd. persteria 'Giant') All have been similar to the picture, purple spots on orange. Free flowering? Be amazed and they seem to be heat tolerant as well. Gold!!!

901 Tuakau Candy 'Preston' x Masd. ignea 'Lava Flow' AM/OSCOV. Reds with yellow stripes or yellow with red stripes, we have seen both. Free flowering, good growing, very pretty nice things.

900 Masd. ignea 'Lava Flow' AM/OSVOV x Masd. davisii. A lovely primary cross of a deep red with a brilliant yellow. Very hardy, strong growers for cool conditions. Pretty and productive.

* 898 Kimballs Sun 'Daffodil' x Masd. peristeria 'Giant' Yellows and near greens with delicate purple spots. Large flowers but short stems, very cute and unusual. Seems to be quite heat tolerant.

885 Rein Staal 'Tassie Giant' x Flight of Fancy 'Beenak'Large showy yellows with red dorsal. Strong substance and long lasting, have flowered one award quality from the few to bloom., so far...

880 Lighting Strips (Stripendous Beenak x Masd. macrura 'Beenak') Some strange pinky mauve tones with dark purple stripes. Awarded in NSW the best of these are obviously pretty good.. Found a few more.

853 Masd. veitchiana 'King Crimson' x Rein Sun 'Merlot' = Clarendon Glory. Two awards on this cross and two near misses. Large pinky reds, wine reds and other wine tones.

*820 Copper Angel 'Highland' AM/AOC x Masd. panguiensis. A great heat tolerant hybrid for rich orange & red flowers. These plants flower sequentially and once mature can flower over the whole year.

*Heat tolerant hybrids are bred to tolerate warmer climates but they still need humid and airy growing conditions. Most Masdevallia hybrids will grow in a warmer climate but refuse to flower due to the right temperature drop not being sufficient. Heat tolerant hybrids are more forgiving in this respect. For those in a cool climate heat tolerant types will still grow just as well.

Dracuvallia Fleur (Drac. gigas x Masd. veitchiana)

Dracuvallia Mem. Maria Arcila (Drac. chimaera x Masd. veitchiana)

Same story as above and we still don't have very many. So grab the opportunity while I am still in a generous mood. Dark hairy orange & brown blooms with pink lip.

We grow the Dracuvallias in water just like the straight Draculas, but don't forget to keep the mix fresh.
